# How Notifications Work

> How Fast Party reaches your guests and members on WhatsApp, email, push and in-app, and what each message is for.

Every invitation, confirmation, update and alert in Fast Party reaches people on the channels they use. **Nobody needs the app to stay informed.** A guest who only uses WhatsApp or email still gets everything they need.

## The four channels

<CardGroup cols={2}>
  <Card title="WhatsApp" icon="whatsapp">
    For messages about a specific event: the invitation, your confirmation, and any update or alert about that event. Each message links straight to the Event Page.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Email" icon="envelope">
    Carries every message type, plus longer updates, digests and general announcements from your organization.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Push" icon="mobile-screen">
    Instant notifications on the Fast Party app for iOS and Android, for anyone who has the app installed.
  </Card>

  <Card title="In-app" icon="bell">
    Everything is also waiting inside Fast Party, on web and in the app, so nothing is lost if a message is missed.
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

<Note>
  Fast Party doesn't send SMS. Guests invited by phone number are reached on WhatsApp.
</Note>

## You hear on every channel you signed up with

When you register, you give a **primary** contact and a **recovery** contact. Notifications go to **both**.

For example, if you register with **WhatsApp as your primary** and **email as your recovery**, an invitation reaches you on WhatsApp *and* by email. If you also have the Fast Party app, you get a push notification too, and it's all in your in-app notifications.

<Tip>
  Add both a phone number and an email when you register. It's the simplest way to make sure you never miss a change to an event.
</Tip>

## The four message types

Every notification is one of four types, so people learn to recognize what each one means.

| Type | What it is | When it's sent |
| - | - | - |
| **Invitation** | "You're invited" with a personal link to the event | When you invite a guest, or when a circle event goes live |
| **Confirmation** | "You're in" | When someone RSVPs, registers or pays |
| **Update** | News about the event | **Immediately** when the host posts, or as a **digest** the next day |
| **Alert** | Something important has changed | Immediately, for changes guests must know about |

See [Message types](/notifications/message-types) for how each one works and which channels carry it.

## Who sends what

<CardGroup cols={3}>
  <Card title="The event host" icon="calendar" href="/notifications/event-wall">
    Posts updates on the event wall and sends event broadcasts from the Event Dashboard.
  </Card>

  <Card title="The organization" icon="building" href="/organizations/broadcasts">
    Sends broadcasts to any of its circles.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Fast Party" icon="bolt" href="/notifications/message-types">
    Sends invitations, confirmations and the daily digest automatically.
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

## Whose name is on the message

Organizations can send from **their own WhatsApp number and email address**, so members hear from the organization they know. If an organization hasn't set these up, messages go out from Fast Party's default account instead. See [Your WhatsApp & Email](/notifications/your-channels).
